Medal Presentation
Thursday 2nd February, we were delighted to welcome Brian Cody to our school to present the medal to the boys and girls of the Clogh/Moneenroe National School's Country Cup team 2016. We thank Brian for given his time and his great words of wisdom. We would also like to thanks Tom Brennan and Joe Coogan who presented the same team with their runner up medals from the School League.
Corn na Tuaithe Final
Clogh/Moneenroe 2-4 Kilmanagh 0-1
Clogh/Moneenroe captured the 2016 Country Cup with a well-deserved victory over a strong Kilmanagh side, which was played under lights in Danesfort on Tuesday evening. The final was due to have been last week but was postponed due to bad weather however the conditions weren’t much better on Tuesday as both teams were met with wind and rain as they did their warmup.
Both teams started well and played some good football considering the conditions, scores though were very hard to come by and it wasn’t until the 14th minute that the first flag was raised which was a Clogh/Moneenroe goal from the boot of Dara Brennan. The goal really settled his side down and they started getting on top all over the field. Clogh/Moneenroe scored a further goal and point through Jonah Kelly to go in at the break 2-1 to 0-0 to the good. Clogh/Moneenroe were well worth their half time lead and had they had a little bit more luck on their side could have been further ahead.
Clogh/Moneenroe started the second half in the same fashion as they finished the first and although scores were hard to come by, they were on top throughout. Some great goal keeping from Charlie Cleere in the Kilmanagh goals kept Clogh/Moneenroe at bay but two points from Jonah Kelly and a long-range effort from Shane Buggy kept the scoreboard ticking over in Clogh/Moneenroe’s favour. Kilmanagh to their credit kept fighting to the end and finally got on the scoresheet when Eoin Egan pointed. Kilmanagh did have two goal chances late on but Luke Flanagan was on hand on both occasions to clear the danger. There were scenes of great joy at the end as joint captains Harry Roche and Luke Flanagan became the first two players to lifted the Country Cup for Clogh/Moneenroe. It was a great team performance from Clogh/Moneenroe who overcame the disappointment of the League final and never let their heads down. This team along with managers Mr. Lonergan and Mr. Butler put in a huge effort all through the year and finished the season with fifteen wins and just the one loss from their sixteen outings. The history makers were Luke Flanagan, Jack O’Neill, John Brennan, Shay Dunne, Malachy Flaherty, Shane Buggy, Francie Ward, Harry Roche, Adam Buggy, Daniel Farrell, Jake Denigan, Dominic Bolster, Chris Phelan, Dara Brennan, Jonah Kelly, Muireann Ryan, Darragh Dunne, Katelyn Farnan, Harry Lawlor, Conor Farnan, Liam Walsh, Eli Bolster, Rebecca Mealy, James O’Neill, Katelyn Kelly, Katie Brennan and Caoimhe Mooney
Country Cup Final Winners - Congratulations
CHAMPIONS - Great win in the Country Cup Final tonight for Clogh/Moneenroe N.S. in very bad conditions. Final score 2-4 to 0-1. Well done to all involved. Full report to follow.

Schools Football: League Final
Clogh/Moneenroe 0-5 Bennettsbridge 1-4
Clogh/Moneenroe fell at the final hurdle in their bid to win the 2016 League when they were narrowly beaten by a physical Bennettsbridge team. Clogh/Moneenroe started well and were 0-4 to 0-0 up after just 8 minutes with 3 point from Jonah Kelly and one from Adam Buggy had things looking good.
Bennettsbridge finally got on the scoresheet on 13 minutes from a free. They were level on 22 minutes when they scored the only goal of the game. Jonah Kelly restored the lead on 23 min with another fine point. Remarkably this was to be the last score of the game for Clogh/Moneenroe. Bennettsbridge level matters before half time to leave the scores 0-5 to 1-2 at the break.
Scores were hard to come by in the 2nd period with both defences on top. It wasn’t to be however for Clogh/Moneenroe and two late pointed frees from Bennettsbridge in the 23rd and 24th minute of the 2nd half were the difference. Clogh/Moneenroe had plenty of chances in the second half to secure victory but it wasn’t to be. Every one of the players should hold their heads high as they are a credit not only to their families but the Clogh/Moneenroe community in general. Well done also to Mr. Lonergan and Mr. Butler. Team Luke Flanagan, Jack O’Neill, John Brennan, Shay Dunne, Malachy Flaherty, Shane Buggy, Francie Ward, Harry Roche, Adam Buggy, Jake Denigan, Dominic Bolster, Chris Phelan, Dara Brennan, Jonah Kelly, Miran Ryan, Darragh Dunne, Katelyn Farnan, Harry Lawlor, Conor Farnan, Liam Walsh, Eli Bolster, Rebecca Mealy, James O’Neill, Katelyn Kelly, Katie Brennan and Caoimhe Mooney.
It is not all doom and gloom as Clogh/Moneenroe still have the country cup final to look forward to.

Well done to all children who participated in our WOW day on Thursday 7th April – it was great to see so many students arriving to school in an environmentally friendly way. Thank you to all parents whom supported this initiative. In October, just 25% of children were walking or cycling to school. We saw a huge increase in this with 90% choosing to walk or cycle or “park n’ stride” on our WOW day. It would be great to see this effort continue into the future.
Our Green Schools Day of Action will take place on Wednesday May 18th. Children will again be encouraged to travel to school in an environmentally friendly way on this day. They will also engage in lessons, activities and competitions on the theme of travel and environmental care.

Green Schools - WOW (Walk on Weekdays)
As you are aware, Moneenroe NS has been successfully engaged in An Taisce's Green Schools programme for many years. We are extremely proud of our achievements to date, and are now working towards our fourth Green Flag for Travel.
As part of this work we will launch our WOW (Walk on Weekdays) initiative on Thursday 7th April.
We are encouraging students and parents to leave their car at home, and walk to school, where possible. Every Wednesday thereafter will be WOW day.
We are aware that walking to school will not be an option for all families. With this in mind we are also encouraging Park 'n Stride. A suggested Park 'n Stride location is Salome Place. You can drop your child and allow them to walk the remainder of the journey to school. Alternatively, you can park and walk with your child if you consider it more appropriate.
Should this initiative be a success, we will see many benefits. Not only will you be helping to directly address the issues attached to our over reliance on fossil fuels, but also the air around the school will be cleaner! The children will benefit directly from the additional exercise (and fresh air), and the school grounds will be safer for all owing to the reduction of cars outside the school.
Sincerely,
Philip Lonergan Laura Gallagher Chiara Hanrahan
Principal GS Coordinator An Taisce

The Green Schools Committee are working on the theme of travel this year. Meetings are held for committee members once a month. We hope to encourage people to travel to school in an environmentally friendly way such as walking and cycling and so reduce the number of children traveling to and from school by car.
Garden/School Tunnel
Sr Anne (Holy Family Sister, Moneenroe and member of our school Board of Management) and a staff member are exploring the possibility of setting up a small school garden as an extra curricular opportunity with pupils with green fingers, This would be an after schools activity on a set day between certain times. If there are any parents interested and willing to help run this extra curricular activity, it would be greatly appreciated. You can express your interest to Nellie in the school office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. It is hoped to have this project up and running late February / early March (weather permitting).

Road Safety
Concern was expressed about the extra volume of cars and people on the road outside the school due to the higher number of pupils in school this year. All parents/guardians are encouraged and asked to park responsibly and remind their child of the importance of careful road safety. There is a pedestrian crossing, speed limits in place and flashing beacons in operation outside our school.
Once again we ask that the two bays in front of the school be left vacant for buses when necessary and wheelchair users. A big push will be undertaken pre and post Halloween to highlight the dangers and hazards of road use in all classes to hopefully ensure that we avoid incidents or accidents outside on the road. This is especially applicable this year as our new Green Schools Committee will be working on the theme of travel (i.e. people walking and cycling to school). Thank you for your support.
